On Monday, September 28th, 2020, the University and student initiative, Hållbar Student, co-hosted the webinar “Building the Sustainable University – Sustainable Development at the University of Borås”.
Nils Lindh, Administrative Officer for Sustainable Development at the University, who has been working with issues concerning sustainable development in government, civil society, business, and education for more than 25 years, shared insights from his work at the university. Raised in Kenya, Africa, Nils spent many years working with environmental issues in Sweden and with development cooperation in Africa .Currently he is developing and coordinating the University of Borås’ work on sustainable development, including work with environmental issues, such as energy use, transport, travel, and waste management. Additionally, Nils and the team he is part of facilitates that the university is working towards the set objectives that students shall receive an education with sustainable development integrated in a relevant way, that there is a focus on sustainable development in research, and that local and international collaborations also contribute to a sustainable devlopment. You can also find Nils teaching introduction to sustainable development within courses at the University.
Currently, Nils helps the University to develop new sustainable development goals for the period 2021-2030, aligned with Agenda 2030 and the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with an official decision expected in November 2020. This important task will be handled within the University’s environmental management system, which has been certified since 2013. Nils works with Birgitta Losman, Sustainable Development Strategist located within the Science Park, and Maria Vesterlund who supports the development of the environmental management system.
The University and its team are well positioned for this change. For over 15 years, the University has reported its environmental performance to the Swedish EPA on an annual basis. In addition, the Climate Students organisation awarded the University first place within the national Climate Action Ranking 2020, https://klimatstudenterna.se/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Climate-Action-Ranking-Report.pdf
Considering Agenda 2030, the University is about to adopt the UN Sustainable Development Goals as its leading objectives for the period 2021-2030. This also aligns to the University’s vision: “Together we take responsibility for the future. Through profiling of education and research, we make a difference”. With this change, the sustainable development work moves from being an addition to being well integrated at the University. For example, all the University’s departments and entities will actively make goal implementation and tracking a relevant and natural part of their future operations.
Where sustainability was once previously experienced in the environmental dimension mainly, it becomes clear that the University of Borås will now address all dimensions of sustainability through its work with all seventeen SDGs in keeping with Agenda 2030. Initial focus is proposed to be on SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Nils, however, pointed out that all seventeen SDGs are considered equally vital to the University’s sustainability development work since they cannot be separated from eachother.
Hållbar Student was thrilled to co-host this informative webinar with the University, as students are co-creators in achieving the SDGs and can help the University take positive steps towards a more sustainable planet to achieve the aims of Agenda 2030. Therefore, all students are strongly encouraged to participate by providing the University with their ideas, suggestions, and questions on sustainable development, as this is a collaborative effort.
